Baseball remains the sport of Cuba. Some claim Cuba is the nation of origin of baseball. Prior to 1959, Cuba provided USA major league baseball numerous outstanding players. The Dodgers held spring training in Cuba. Jose Contreras signed a $32 million dollar, four year stint with the New York Yankees on December 24, 2002, only a few months after defecting from Cuba.
