Horses have played an important role in Independence wars, agriculture, and recreation in Cuba for centuries. Jose Marti was killed while riding a horse in battle charging enemy lines. Horse racing and gambling were very popular in Cuba prior to 1959. Policemen routinely patrolled on top of horses throughout Cuba. Horse riding is becoming a popular way to see rural Cuba at tourist locations. We offer recommendations for the global community regarding seeing Cuba on horseback.
